Jazz Vespers Series
Beach Jazz & Reflection Series
Saturday, October 2nd at 4:30pm the
Gillian Margot Trio,
with Jordan O'Connor and Stu Harrison, features at the Jazz Vespers Series.
Gillian Margot twice received the Ella Fitzgerald Award and scholarship for excellence in jazz performance from York University. Between 1999 an 2006, Margot toured extensively as an alto and soloist with Canada's renowned Nathaniel Dett Chorale, and then took her jazz trio as far as Hong Kong and Australia. In 2007, the Ontario Arts Council awarded her the Chalmers Professional Development Grant. Recently, Margot completed her studies in piano and composition with internationally renowned American jazz pianist, Norman Simmons, and is already writing for her next album.
Jordan O'Connor has played in a variety of settings, leading several of his own ensembles since the age of fifteen. He has released 3 CDs, and numerous online releases. His first CD, Cash Cow's "When We Were Little Girls" won best Jazz album of the year from the National Post - 2001. Most recently release is "Lebreton" a solo bass recording of O'Connor's original score for the film, "Tkaronto." For fun he is currently studying 16th & 18th Century counterpoint.
Stu Harrison competed in classical piano at the national level as a teen, switched to jazz, after finding inspiration in his improvisation as a church organist. He graduated from University of Toronto's jazz performance program and quickly became established in the 'entertainment' business as a band leader and arranger. Following a 5 year tenure with Garden Brothers Circus, as musical director, Harrison is now focusing on small jazz ensembles, most prominently the Gillian Margot Trio.
