On March 27, 2008, Beach United Church launched its "green" efforts by hosting the first ever Conservation Fair in the Beach. That same year, BUC launched an Eco-Challenge to the congregation by asking members to increase their monthly donations by $1.50 per household in order to switch the church's electric power to Bullfrog Power. By the end of the year, the challenge was met and in early 2009, Beach United Church made the switch! BUC continues to challenge residents of the local community to consider making the switch to Bullfrog. For further information about BullfrogPower Inc, go to www.bullfrogpower.com.

The Green Team is a dedicated group of people who are doing their best to care for God’s amazing creation at Beach United. If you want to get involved, we welcome you to join Lynn Scholey, Carolyn Ward, Elaine Graham, Bruce Burley, Leigh Bowser, Ron Fitton, and Karen Dale (staff support).

The Green Team have challenged the congregation to name a “THOUSAND ACTS OF GREEN” - things that we do to help conserve energy and help the environment.

GREEN AWAKENING NETWORK

What is the Green Awakening Network?

The Green Awakening Network is a group of congregations of the United Church of Canada from across the City of Toronto. These churches have come together to share ideas and experiences, in partnership with others, on how to respond to the challenge of climate change and how to reduce our "carbon footprint." At this time, partners are Greening Sacred Spaces and the Centre for Church Development Leadership.

As a "network", this is not a formal organization and it is intended to act more like a faith-based resource on climate change among UCC congregations. We hope that it will be an inspiration and a catalyst for action for the wider community in which we are located.

The Green Awakening project also provides a focused and action-oriented opportunity for networking among congregations interested in "eco-justice".

The new network is excited to announce that it is the recipient of one of the first grants from the City of Toronto’s "Live Green: Toronto Community Investment Program".

What is the purpose of The Green Awakening Network?

The Green Awakening Network's chief goals are to:

  • develop a strong awareness of the imperative to act in response to the challenge to reduce greenhouse gases;

  • develop a preparedness within our communities for the challenges that they face as a result of climate change;

  • implement programs of action in partnership with community groups in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
